Esther (Ittner) Baur passed away Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born to Frieda (Koch) and Henry Ittner in Beaver Township, Bay County, Michigan on July 27, 1920. She graduated from Bay City High School in 1938.
She was married to George W. Baur on June 6, 1942 in Beaver Township, Bay County, Michigan at Zion Lutheran Church and lived all her married life in McKinley Township, Huron County, working beside George on their farm as well as being a homemaker for her family. They were married 69 years.
Esther was a member of the McKinley Homemakers Extension Club, Mud Creek Farm Bureau group, and Scheurer Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of Hayes UMC, serving many years as treasurer. She also was a member of Hayes UMW and served on the Memorial Committee.
Esther enjoyed working on large picture puzzles, word puzzles, and fishing on the pontoon in Wild Fowl Bay and Drummond Island. She had many friends and neighbors at home and at Las Olas Beach Club, Satellite Beach, Florida.
Surviving are three sons, Tom (Jeanne) of Ault, Colorado, Randy (Lorna) of Bay Port, and Bill (Elaine) of Flushing; a daughter, Patricia (Robert) Lum of Flint; grandchildren, Cheryl (Alex), Leanne (Michelino), Andrew (Haley), and Matthew (Vanessa); step-grandchildren, Darrin (Kara) and David (Robin); great-grandchildren, Sydney, William, Lydia, Luke, Owen, Ava, and Massimo; step-great-grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew; three sisters, Doris Buechler, Frances Washe, and Gwendolyn (Herb) Bach; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Nona Gordon.
The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with Rev. Bruce Nowacek officiating. Burial will take place at the Caseville Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Hayes United Methodist Church building fund, Scheurer Hospital Auxiliary or the charity of the donor's choice.

What a beautiful lady! She made the most amazing sand tarts! My children would get so excited when ever we had a church family potluck and Ester would bring those most yummy treats! My oldest child could never remember her first name. He would say remember Mom she is the lady that makes those tarts! She always had the most beautiful smile.

Our hearts are heavy with sadness upon hearing of Esther's passing. We have many, many memories of good times at Las Olas playing dominoes and our potluck dinners with her special baked beans. Paul and I are sorry we are unable to attend the funeral but the entire family will be in our thoughts and prayers. We know she is in God's arms Our sympathy to all of you. Dear Uncle George, and cousins (Tom, Randy, Patricia and Bill): My often thought of, and long time memory of Aunt Esther is her thoughtfulness for years and years on our birth dates. Even though she had 4 children and my mom (her sister) had 5, we all received Birthday cards from her on our birthdays. This simple, yet sweet act, was so meaningful to me that to this day I send my nieces and nephews cards on their special day in honor of Esther.

I remember the first year Randy and I were married. Esther & George raised chickens. It was time to prepare the chickens for the freezer. I watched George chop the heads off and put them in hot water that wasn't too bad. Then we started plucking feathers. I pitched righ in and helped. I didn't mind that job. The next part was Esther's job. We took the chickens in the house. Esther got out the butcher knife and made the proper incision. Then she started pulling out the insides and I was gone. I didn't mind the feather plucking but I couldn't handle the rest of it. It amazed me how she could do that and it didn't seem to bother her. We sure did have some nice roast chicken and dressing for Sunday dinners.
Esther was a quiet woman. She did not fit those typical mother-in law jokes. She was not interferring. I could not have asked for a better mother-inlaw. I know Elaine and Jeanne agree with me. She was there when you need her. It was nice living next door. Cheryl could see grandma when ever she wanted.
Esther had the most beautiful hand writing. She put it to good use too. One of her favorite things to do was to send greeting cards. She not only kept track of the family member's birthday and anniversaries but also the friends and neighbors.
Esther inherited Grandma Maud's old fashion starter yeast. She made the most delicious homemade bread, coffee cakes and cinnamon rolls. Friday night she would set the yeast and Saturday it was either bread or coffee cakes that was baked. Randy , Cheryl and I living next door enjoyed a lot of those fresh baked goodies. The yeast has now been passed on to me. If anyone in the family would like a starter kit let me know. We also enjoyed chocolate chip cookies, sand tarts, homemade chocolate pudding delicious cream puffs and pfefferness cookies. Esther inherited that receipe from her Mom. I remember the receipe called for a penny's worth of this, a nickel of that and a handful of something else. Esther figured out what the amounts should be in cups and spoonfuls. Esther loved flowers and plants. When her plants grew too big, she would take a slip off of them and start new ones. She would give new plants to others. Esther also loved milking cows.
