Gwendolyn Helen "Gwen" Sommers, age 89 of Bad Axe and formerly of the Caseville and Pigeon areas, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe.
Born in Elmwood Township on July 13, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Jessie (Andrews) Winchester. On April 16, 1960 she was united in marriage to Edgar L. Sommers in Caro and he preceded her in death on September 14, 1999. Gwen worked at manufacturing factories in Detroit, Owendale, Bay City, and Cass City prior to her marriage to Edgar. The couple lived in Monroe prior to moving to the Caseville and Pigeon areas.
Gwen attended the Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed reading the Bible and visiting with family and friends. She knew that there was a place for her in heaven.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, June and Willis Farnum of Pigeon (formerly of Owendale); two brothers, William Winchester and Jerry (Betty) Winchester, both of Gagetown; three sisters-in-law, LaDonna (Herbert) Engel of Bad Axe, Ellen Sommers of South Carolina, and Marlene Sommers of Tecumseh; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Norma Fournier, Beulah Hobart, Althea Lorencz, Jane Hudson, and Margaret Winchester, and four brothers, John, C.L., James, and Carlton Winchester.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with Rev. William Thorn, pastor of the Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in Caseville Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Bad Axe Church of the Nazarene or the charity of donor's choice.
