Sheril M. "Bud" Schaaf, 83 of Pigeon, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2012 at his home with family by his side.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Schaaf; a dear daughter, Sue (Sam) Gottschalk of Elkton; granddaughter Kim Frost (special friend Tom Williams) of Sebewaing; grandson Jim Hallock of Elkton (special friend Vicki Arnott of Bad Axe); sister Gladys Wilfong of Port Sanilac; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norm and Ida (Weidman) Schaaf; son, Robert; brothers, Arnold, Clarence, Walt, Glenn, and Oliver; and sisters, Mabel Damm and Clara Dudley.
Bud served with the U.S. Army for four years during the Korean War, and was a lifetime member of the Pigeon VFW Post #2236. He owned Pigeon Tile Works with his brother Ollie, and worked at the Pigeon Co-op Elevator for 21 years, retiring in 1993. He also owned and operated Schaaf Hardware for four years.
Bud was a member of the Pigeon Lions Club. For 30 years he was Pigeon's Santa Claus, with his wife as Mrs. Claus for 16 years. He was active with Pigeons Farmer Festival, selling buttons and helping line up parade floats for many years, and a few years ago he and Virginia were honored as Grand Marshalls for the parade. He was also the Farmers Festival Town Sheriff for many years.
Bud delivered meals on wheels. He made wood crafts for craft shows. He and his wife enjoyed fishing in their boat, gardening every summer, and sitting outside on their swing visiting with family and friends. He loved playing with his cats Andy and Fuzzy.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon, with Pastor Steve Bouverette officiating. A Veterans Tribute will be offered at the Pigeon VFW Post #2236 following the service. Cremation will take place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City and burial will be in Grandlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Scheurer Hospital or Heartland Hospice.
